All About Bipolar: HBO to air story of teen with bipolar disorder

Boy Interrupted

HBO will soon air the heart-wrenching story of Evan Scott Perry, who lost his lifelong battle with bipolar disorder on October 2, 2005 by jumping from his bedroom window in New York City. The documentary, Boy Interrupted, is directed by his parents, Dana and Hart Perry. They share the intensely personal story of the life and death of their beloved son.

Since the Perrys were professional filmmakers, they had mountains of video footage that chronicled Evan’s entire life. They never imagined that it would end up becoming the primary source of material for a documentary that portrays their son’s short life. Supplemented by interviews with family, friends, doctors and teachers, the footage allows you to gain an intimate familiarity with the vibrant yet troubled young man.

Evan Perry’s life was marked by intense mood swings that alarmed his parents. (His uncle committed suicide in 1971.) Boy Interrupted is a touching documentary that demonstrates that even the best defenses – love, vigilance and treatment – cannot always protect those most vulnerable from themselves.

Be sure to catch this intimate portrayal of a young man’s valiant battle with bipolar disorder and how it affected those who knew and loved him.

Boy Interrupted debuts Monday, August 3 (9:00-10:30 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.
