February 2010: 2nd Annual Bipolar Disorder Awareness Month

I sincerely wanted the second annual Bipolar Disorder Awareness Month to be even bigger than last year. My life has become quite hectic in the past few weeks and it has prevented me from fulfilling my goals. I have faith that next year will be better.

I would like to ask all of you to continue to educate others about bipolar disorder–and not just this month. I am proud to say that a little bit of education goes a long way and I was reminded of this yesterday. I was sitting in a lawyer’s office (No, I am not in any trouble.) and the lawyer and secretary was discussing a case involving a man who had child pornography on his computer. His lawyer had stated in court that he had a mild case of bipolar disorder and the secretary asked if it it made people do things like that. The lawyer told her it was bullshit because bipolar disorder does not cause someone to do things like that. I smiled. Finally, there are people who do not associate us with horrible acts. The lawyer even went one step further and educated the secretary.

We are making a difference in the how the world sees bipolar disorder. Let’s continue our efforts.
